Mass killing pit

The massacre pit with a memorial stone was erected in 1985 with the inscription ‘The corpses dug up from the massacre sites were burnt here’ (in Lithuanian and Russian). The inscription is not accurate because from the end of 1943 onwards, bodies were burnt in areas near the pits. According to the Special Soviet Commission, which exhumed 27 bodies in the pit, up to 12,000 Jewish may have been shot here between 1941 and 1942. There were two platforms and three bonfires next to the pit for burning the bodies. Most of the terrain around the pit was destroyed during the extermination of the massacre traces by the Nazi in 1943-1944.
