The first monument at the site of the Paneriai massacre was erected by the efforts of Jewish survivors of the Holocaust. In 1948, members of the community raised funds and erected a monument with inscriptions in Russian and Yiddish to commemorate the murdered Jewish. In 1952, the monument was demolished by order of the Soviet authorities and replaced by an obelisk with the inscription ‘To the Victims of Fascist Terror’.
